A new set of teeth in one visit to the dentist

A new dental technique called 'all on 4 implants' for a new smile in a single day

One of the most common complaints about dental implants is the time take between the extraction of the tooth and the fitting of the dental implant. Add to this, the time taken for the implant to integrate with the jawbone and the treatment period can seem quite lengthy.

What is not as well known though is that in some cases, the implant can be placed immediately after the extraction has taken place. This most commonly happens with a same day dental implant or as it is sometimes called, an all on 4 procedure.

This procedure usually happens when a whole arch of teeth are to be removed and replaced with a fixed bridge. This in turn is held in place with 4 dental implants, 2 standard ones at the front and 2 smaller ‘mini’ implants placed at the rear of the jaw.

To perform this procedure, a local anaesthetic will be administered to numb the jaw and the teeth then removed. The dental implants are then placed directly into the sockets that have been left after the tooth has been extracted. The two at the front are placed at the usual angle of 90 degrees whilst the rear ones are placed at a 45 degree angle to give extra security. This also means that smaller implants can be used which is ideal for those who have lost a lot of bone density and would otherwise have to have a bone graft prior to the placing of implants.

Once the implants have been placed, the fixed bridge will be attached and within a single day, the patient will be able to leave the dental practice with a full set of teeth.

Naturally, once the anaesthetic wears off, there will be some tenderness and although the new teeth will be already functioning, it is strongly advised that only very soft (and possibly liquid) foods should be eaten initially. You will be able to build up to harder foods as time goes by and the gums start to heal but it is better to err on the side of caution to prevent any damage to the dental implants themselves.

This procedure is offered at many cosmetic dental practices throughout the UK and not just the top ones in London either. Many such as www.derbydentalimplants.co.uk offer this alongside other cosmetic dental treatments such as standard dental implants, adult orthodontics and even more cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening.

This procedure offers an excellent alternative to the increasingly outdated dentures which can become uncomfortable and loose over time and cause the wearer to lose confidence in social situations.
